Private Public Collaboration – An Example of Biosolids Circularity

April 4, 2022

Building a pathway to sustainable biosolids management is a key topic amongst many Australian and New Zealand Water Authorities. Consideration of technology, legislative change, public perception, circular economy thinking and emerging contaminants all form part of a roadmap to managing biosolids.

Recently in Germany we have seen some unique collaborations between public water utilities and private organisations, who are teaming up with the common goal of decarbonization.

Heidelberg Cement AG is one of the world’s largest building materials group and they recently set themselves some industry leading targets for reducing carbon emissions.

Partnering with HUBER Technology, Heidelberg Cement have commissioned a BT Thermal Drying Facility that uses waste heat from their cement manufacturing process together with biosolids from the local Water Authority.

The dried biosolid output of the waste heat driven dryer is used as fuel in the cement manufacturing process and has a calorific value of approx. 10 MJ/kg. The drying system will process 70,000 t/a of biosolids and provide approx. 194,000 GJ of energy per year, displacing approx. 20,000 t/a of brown coal that was previously in use and avoid 70,000t/a of biosolids going to landfill.

Being a renewal energy source, the use of the dried biosolids material as a fuel, forms a key component in Heidelberg Cement’s path to becoming carbon neutral.
