World Water Day, March 22nd

Spare a thought for the 2.1 billion people globally that live without the luxury of safe water at home, or the one in four primary schools that have no water services. Other statistics reported by UN-Water suggest nearly two-thirds of the world’s population experience severe water scarcity during at least one month of the year and, 700 million people worldwide could be displaced by intense water scarcity by 2030.

World Water Day, March 22nd, is an annual reminder of the importance of water. This year the theme is ‘Leaving no one behind’. Leaving no one behind is a reference to the Sustainable Development Goals established in 2015 by the United Nations 2030 Agenda, specifically the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

By 2020, SDG 6 has set one target which is to protect and restore all water-related ecosystems, whilst the support and strengthening of the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management is an open ended target.

The remaining 6 targets of SDG 6 to be achieved by 2030 are:

• Achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all
• Achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations
• Improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimising release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally
• Substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity
• Implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate
• Expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies
